Adding Value – Client Blogs & Your Work

One of the many challenges you will have to overcome if you are paid to blog is ensuring that you are adding value to your clients blogs.  There are a number of ways that you can do this and there are tools that can assist you in making sure that you can do it consistently.

Themes - When you initially start a blog for your client, verify that the theme for the blog matches their overall corporate image.  While there are hundreds of available blog themes, you should make sure that the overall theme is in line with the theme on their website.  If you have strayed too far from the overall color scheme, clients will be confused.  Flashy blog themes do not add any value.

Posts – Make sure that you keep posts relevant, accurate and well written.  Try to keep blog posts clear, crisp and concise.  Remember, you are writing for a target audience. Make sure you avoid “talking down” or other unappealing tones.  If you are part of a group of people writing on a single blog, make sure that the tone remains consistent throughout.  This can be challenging to do, but should be done as often as possible.

Frequency - If you are blogging for a client, try to maintain consistency in the frequency of your posts.  Avoid rotating the days that you are posting!  Remember, if you have an established readership, they will be looking for additional information on specific days.  Decide what day you will add content and do it consistently.

Editing - Always proofread your blog posts. Nothing is less professional than a post that is full of typographical errors. Proofreading can be a challenge, especially if you have a lot of blogs to maintain. Utilize spell checkers in your blogging software or copy your work into your favorite word processor. Verifying accuracy before posting means less opportunity for error.  You may want to consider saving posts in draft mode and coming back and looking at them later. Often, this will result in finding errors.

Commenting

If you have set up your clients blogs to accept comments, do not ignore comments that may require responses.  It is highly recommended that all comments be held for moderation. Unfortunately, regardless of the type of blog you maintain, the incidents of spam comments is very high.

Summary

It is important that your clients feel they are getting the most out of what you are being paid to maintain their blogs. These are just a few of the ways that you can ensure that a client feels they are getting the value from your blogging for them.

As usual good points, however I think that s it’s also important to ensure that the content is SEO maximised to ensure that the blog is going to rank. Surprised nothing there about that content is great but focused content with the clients keywords is better.
