Deadlines are just that – Deadlines

Deadlines are just that – Deadlines

One of the challnges of being a freelance writer is working under deadlines. Few things will frustrate your clients more than having you miss (or ignore) deadlines. If you are not prepared to finish a project on time, don’t accept it. It can only damage your reputation.  You can help mitigate these types of issues by doing a few easy things: 1.  Be realistic – Don’t make promises that you know you cannot keep. If you know that you have a lot of projects coming up and you feel that adding another project will mean missing one (or more)...

Helpful Hints for Freelancers

One of the challenges of freelancing is that you often feel like you are alone.  There is not any reason to feel that way, there are others who have been in the same position.  Here are a group of articles that can help provide some tips and tricks to successful freelance writing. Finding paid work from home – One of the biggest challenges in starting a freelance career is finding jobs.   There are some helpful hints in this article that can help make sure that you don’t fall victim to a scam. Getting a job on Craigslist – Craigslist...

Freelancing Time Management – Why it Matters

Although working at home has been glamorized as an opportunity to set your own hours and do your own thing, as we discussed in an earlier post, your clients really do set your schedule for you.  While most freelancers tend to organize their days to suit themselves, sometimes that opportunity arises to do a “one of” job that if you have properly managed your time, you can do very easily. If you are a freelancer there are opportunities for you to manage your time that your brick and mortar counterparts simply do not have. You do have the upside...

Online Freelancing – frustrations

Online freelancing is not for everyone.  Along with self discipline, you must also have a second sense about what your clients want, and if they will pay. This is far more difficult when you are working with a new buyer.  Here are some red flags that you can be wary of: 1.  No up front – If you prefer to work with up front payments (and I do) if a buyer refuses to pay something up front in spite of the fact that you have a long history of delivery, you should reconsider before you accept the job.  Unfortunately,...

Pay It Forward

Pay It Forward

Like many others, I was fortunate enough to get a real break into freelance writing.  While others may protest about this post, I am a strong believer in “you get what you give”.  Not all of us are in a position to help others financially, but there are some things that you can to do pay it forward. A) Share your knowledge – All of us have different knowledge levels about things that other people like to know about.   From the most learned scholar to the student of life, we all have something we can share.  Take a minute...

Twitter Marketing

Twitter Marketing

I am not going to pretend that I’m an expert on Twitter. Far from it – in fact, I’ve barely crossed the one month mark using Twitter for anything. But, there are some things that I have learned that I hope can help others and save them some of the grief I have experienced in getting started. A) Your time - Before you start marketing on Twitter, establish how much time you’re willing to spend working on your Twitter account. Read my prior post regarding Twitter tools and decide which one works best for you.  There is no doubt...

Goals for 2010

Goals for 2010

If you have not set your goals for 2010 perhaps it is time to think about them.  While we are a few days into the new year, not everyone took the time during the holidays to set their goals. Goal setting should be done with caution. Do not set unrealistic expectations for yourself.  While you certainly want to stretch your limits a bit if you can, do not set goals that are unattainable (i.e. I’m going to make a million dollars in 2010).  Setting your goals should include: A)  Monthly work goals – These would be the goals that...

Twitter Time – Making the most of it

Twitter Time – Making the most of it

There is little doubt that Twitter is a powerful social networking tool. Just ask any of the Helium Writers who have accounts and are using Twitter to promote their articles. There is one major issue with Twitter however, you can waste a lot of time that you might otherwise be able to be making some real money!  Not that you are not going to make some money promoting on Twitter, but don’t spend a ton of time using only Twitter as an earnings avenue. I’ve had the opportunity to check out several Twitter tools over the last month. There are...

What’s with the Spam? – An Ounce of Prevention

What’s with the Spam? – An Ounce of Prevention

There are thousands of blogs that are available online.  If you are a blog owner, chances are that you have had spam comments. What’s curious about them is what is behind them? Most of these spam comments are all about promoting something – whether it is an online dating site, a pharmaceutical site, or some other bogus website or link that can cause you nothing but grief. In under two hours today I eliminated more than 50 spam comments from this very blog. What are these people getting out of this? Chances are that someone is trying to increase...

Twitter Users – Beware!

Twitter Users – Beware!

Just like any other internet site, you have to use common sense on Twitter.  There are thousands of Twitter users who are selling something – you can find them very easily.   They are promoting MLM programs (which personally I detest), they are promoting Affiliate Marketing programs (and someone is making money from these, I don’t know who, but someone is). Everyone has something for sale. I’m not an exception to that rule – and I won’t pretend that I am.  Recently I’ve been promoting an iPhone Application on Twitter.  However, I have no vested financial interest in this application,...

Twitter Followers – Who to UnFollow

Twitter Followers – Who to UnFollow

If you are a member on Twitter, you might be having some struggles trying to determine who all these followers are and where they are coming from.  Join the club! I’ll talk about identifying Twitter Follower “Types” in another post, but in this post I am going to talk about who NOT to follow and who you might want to consider unfollowing.  If you are like me you’re getting a hundred emails a day from Twitter saying “This person is now following you”. Go to the link that Twitter provides you but before you agree to follow PLEASE look...

Twitter Followers – Branding

A couple of months ago I started watching Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn as potential sources of new traffic and earnings.  Frankly, I’m the skeptical type. I have to see that something works before I jump in with two feet. Any of you who have read my blog posts here or on my other blog know that I tend to be practical with my time, I don’t go for pie in the sky and I don’t believe it’s possible to make a million dollars sitting on your rear end and doing nothing.  So let me introduce you to Twitter and...
