Why does it seem that the bulk of comments that show up in most blogs, are trying to sell pharmaceuticals, pay per click sites, and a variety of other “name”? I’ve long since been convinced, that most of this crap comes from bots. I’m not too sure how to avoid this stuff. Short of ending comments completely, there does not seem to be another way of dealing with it.
Like most WordPress users, I use Akismet, I put all comments in moderation, and I try to review new comments daily. One of the challenges, is that “Pingbacks” often wind up in spam. I’m not sure there’s an easy way to avoid this happening.
I would be most interested, in finding out other people’s experiences with the variety of tools that are available. Like many, I don’t have the time to spend an hour or two a day wiping out the 50 to 100 “spam comments” out of my blogs.
Adding a no follow link, also is not my goal. I often encourage people to login, leave comments, and leave their own website link in that comment. I don’t want to have to take this away. If I had to, I suppose I could just make links no follow. This would of course and the spam. If if any regular readers would like to have their blogs link to this blog, please feel free to leave a comment. When I do approve comments, I generally will add other blog links, website links, etc. to our blog roll.
If anyone has any ideas outside of the ones I’ve mentioned, please feel free to share them.
