As part of our ongoing series offering hints for tools to work at home, we continue today with time tracking and task management. Whether we want to admit it or not, all of us waste a fair amount of time. There are ways to curb waste of time, but first you must identify how you wasting time. There are several free tools that are available for tracking exactly what you are doing online. One of the easiest ones I have found, is a free open-source program called WR Time tracker. This program allows you to set up a free account, turn on the timer, and make notes of what you working on at the time. What this will allow you to do, is at the end of a specified period of time you can go back and see how you’re spending your time.
One of the biggest challenges with freelancing, is making sure that you use your time to the best advantage. remember, when you’re working for yourself time is money. The more ways you can identify to cut back on wasted time, the easier it is for you to invest our time and money making.
For those of you who have more than one member of your team, you can also use this time tracker invoicing, billing, and a variety of other options. Proper use of this program, should tell you if you are spending your time in the best possible manner. It will allow you to easily sort out billable and unbillable hours. One of the best things about this, is it is entirely online. There is nothing to download, and the data is stored.
For project management, you may be wondering how you assign separate task codes for each piece of the project. In one of our earlier posts, we talked about the Zoho office suite. They also offer a useful time project management tool that is also free of charge. This planner, can help you with a day-to-day list, project list, or however you feel is most productive for your planning purposes.
There are several other online templates and samples of time tracking tools, project management tools, they can help you be more productive. Find the one that works best for you. The most important part is that you find something that you will use regularly until you have the system worked out way you may no longer need something to keep you on track. These tools also helpful if you are juggling multiple clients, multiple projects, or if you simply have a large list of tasks that needs to be accomplished daily.
Fortunately, one of the best things that’s ever happened to the Internet is the availability of so many free tools. In our next post, we will discuss web browsers, plug-ins for browsers, and other helpful items that can help you be successful working at home.
One thing that is important to remind you of, is that every tool will not work for every person. Make sure you find a group of tools that works best for you. Like everything else, tools are not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Each person will find a group of tools that works best for them.

Time tracking software certainly does help identify where you’re wasting time. As an example take a look at how we’re using Qlockwork – time tracking software that we developed – to figure out how much time is being spent on email: http://qlockwork.com/timetrackingthoughts/2010/04/email-efficiency/
