Freelancing – Why Teamwork Matters

In today’s society, it is not uncommon for a small business owner to hire several freelancers to help manage their business. You may have a team of freelancers who are doing entirely different tasks, while assisting you with the same client.  Many small businesses now maintain fully virtual offices.

One of the challenges of this is ensuring that these freelancers are made to feel like they are part of your team. This is not necessarily that difficult to do. Even when your team members are working across different time zones, there are methods to ensure they are working together.

One option is to introduce your team to each other via e-mail. When they are working on the same project, it’s helpful if they are in direct communication with each other. Let’s for example say that you have one person designing a website, and another person creating the content of that site. Rather than all of the information going through you, it may be just as easy to have them communicate with each other.

As a buyer of freelancing services, it’s understandable that you will want to have control over the work that you are having your freelancers do. However, building relationships between your team members can be critical to success. Once you’ve built your team, and you’re comfortable with them, you should have developed enough trust to allow them to work together without monitoring every single step.

This isn’t to say that you should take a hands-off approach. In fact, you should not take a completely hands-off approach to any part of your business. The most effective team has a leader – and that leadership should always come from you.  At the same time, allowing your freelancers to work together will help them develop a sense of ownership on all of your projects.

Teamwork does matter. While it may be more challenging to manage team of freelancers, there are many things you can do to facilitate good communication between your team members. The more you can rely on your freelancers, to do what you want done, the more time you can effectively seek out new business.

Building trust within your team will require you to be a strong leader. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each team member will allow you to assign them tasks, stand back, and let the work get done.
