Successful people share certain traits. Most can handle a great deal of responsibility and are hard working, persevering, honest and capable of self-evaluation. They understand that self-employment generally implies the pressure to perform, long hours and irregular income.
To decide whether you need to become self-employed, you need to examine your motivation and commitment of such an undertaking. Then you need to look at your strengths and weaknesses. Once you identify them, you can capitalize on your strengths and compensate for your weaknesses.
When making your decision, a few questions you should ask are:
- Will becoming independent meet my career goals?
- Am I ready to work long hours every day?
- Do I have expertise in a profession, trade or hobbies that can be transformed into a business?
- Does my idea for a company effectively use my skills and abilities?
- I am a good planner and organizer?
- Can I make my own decisions and live with them?
- Am I willing to postpone my plans for further education, if any?
- Does my family support my effort?
- Do I have the financial means and emotional stability without putting either at risk if the business fails?
- If you answered no to some of these questions, you wonder if you really want to start a business.
The desire to own a business is not sufficient to go ahead with the plan. Part of determining your ability to be self-employed is your willingness to accept that being self employed might not be for you. After all, it’s better to discover this investing a lot of time and money.
