Are you are freelance writer? Chances are good that you have heard how freelancers can’t make any money just from writing. This is definitely not true and more a 2005 mindset if anything else. The truth is that you can make plenty of money as a freelancer, but you don’t just have to sell your services as a writer. Stop for a second and consider what other ways you can make yourself some money.
Freelancers have many skills that set themselves apart from other professions. Not only are we good writers, but we are good thinkers, researchers and distributors of new ideas. There are so many things that you can do to make money as a freelancer without lifting your electronic pen at all. So what are some specific jobs that you could do to make money without writing?
One way that a freelancer can make money without writing is to simply be a good researcher. It is amazing how many people don’t want to even bother trying to find sources for a paper in a day and age where Google exists. If there is one thing that people dread it is doing a works cited or trying to find sources that they can use in a paper. If you are like me you also dread doing works cited, but you still can point people to sources where you can find the proper format, or at least point people to sources of information.
If you are a writer, it stands to reason that you also are good at marketing. To survive as a writer it takes a savvy mind when it comes to promoting the written word. You probably have a good idea as to how to use Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites. Use your expertise to help new writers or others in the business field to harness the power of the Internet these days.
At the ripe old age of 25, I can still sum up my experience starting out as a writer with the phrase, “back in my day.” I remember back in the day long ago in 2007 when it took three months just to hear back from a publisher and Facebook and Twitter were just some passing fad that people wasted time on. Now look at where we are in just three years! Writers can make more money than ever before in a much faster period of time.
A savvy tech mind will have a good Internet presence for their business. For a writer this is vital as it allows publishers to come to you, and your audience to come to you as well. As successful writer will not only have great writing skills, but will also have the skills to harness the power of the Internet and be rewarded with many opportunities to cash in on those skills.
So what are you waiting for? You don’t have to be writing to make money as a writer. Think about those other skills you have and ways that you can market them. In the world of the web anything is possible.
