Reviewing your older work

Most online writers find that they are adding new work consistently to their online portfolio. Whether they are using a blog or an online writing site (or a combination of both) chances are that they have numerous pieces of work that are posted someplace.

The end of the year is quickly approaching – this might be an excellent time to start reviewing the work that you have online and find out if it can be improved. Most freelance writers do not change their style a lot over time, however, their writing is constantly improving.  Since this is the case, chances are that most freelance writers have work online that is not as good as it could (or should) be and is not gaining as much traffic.

Create a plan

It is challenging to go back over your work and edit that work. This is even more challenging if you have numerous blogs or sites that you write for.  The best possible option is to create a plan and review your work a little bit at a time.  This does not mean that you have to spend hours every day modifying work, it simply means that a little bit at a time, you should work to review your older work.

Benefits of modification

There are numerous benefits to rewriting your work. There may be new information available since you originally wrote the work, for sites (like Helium) it allows you to potentially increase your rankings and it also allows you to gauge how far you have come as a writer. However, the bigger benefit is the potential for increased earnings.  As you are modifying your articles you can add links and titles to a spreadsheet for easy sorting and prepare them for a variety of uses including building a single portfolio, preparing them for Twitter and for keeping track of which articles you have used on other sites.

Modifying over time

You should not try to modify everything at one time.  Set up a solid plan to review your oldest articles and do a few each day. As the months tick away, it is a good idea to revisit all of your work, but do not sacrifice your earnings from new work for the potential of updating prior work.

The end of the year is a good time to review your work and see what can be improved. This is a great opportunity to allow you to organize your work, explore social networking opportunities and potentially increase your potential earnings.
