Internet Brands is a very interesting site for earning money from article writing. In fact, they offer a variety of writing opportunities for writers. My first attempt at Internet Brands was in August of 2010. The site requires writers to submit an application along with a writing sample for a “niche” topic. Writers can sign up at Knowledge Brands for a variety of opportunities that may be available. It is important to read and follow their format for all types of articles.
Amount of work
When I first signed up at Internet Brands there seemed to be an unending flow of work. The article area was populated sometimes two or three times a day and there were hundreds of titles at a time to select from. Writers are allowed to “hold” five articles in their writing dashboard at a time, but not more than that. Most articles have a deadline that is about 5 days after the date they are claimed. For perspective, I selected the “legal” topics as this seemed to be one of my more “lucrative” topics since not that many writers like them. I happen to.  In August when I signed up, articles were required to have about 400 or less words. 400 word articles were paying $25 and 300 word articles were paying $20 (not too shabby, about 6 cents a word). In November the amount of work dried up to a trickle and all writers received an email regarding the work. We were assured that more work would be forthcoming but with some changes.
What changes were made
The changes were not really “awful”. The work became more “tip” oriented and the word count dropped to 250 words and the pay dropped to $10 (yes now 4 cents a word). However, on an hourly basis, this was not all that bad because it was not impossible to write 2 or 3 articles in an hour – especially if you were able to pluck them out of the same basic subject, it cut your research time in half and made writing much easier. The problem was the amount of work also seemed to drop off with this change.
The good and the bad
The good news is that Internet Brands does pay (and pay timely and well). There are no ongoing revenue opportunities (though there may be in some channels). Writers can earn a good deal of money especially if they nab the maximum amount of articles and get them submitted right away.
The downside of this is that writers do not know when new work is being uploaded. There is no type of notification of new work, there is no notification when an article needs editing and there is no notification when it has been accepted. To find out of there is new work available you have to log into your account and check the dashboard. While this is not necessarily a big deal, one has to remember that the articles are on a first come/first served basis. If you don’t log in when assignments first get posted, you may miss out completely.
With all of that said – I really do enjoy writing for Internet Brands. The editors are terrific when there is a problem to be corrected, the system is easy to use and the keywords are provided. They are not looking for churned out garbage, you have to write well to be accepted and if you don’t continue to write well you are done.
Signing up was easy and getting assignments is a hit and miss proposition but this site is a good source of income.
