Sometimes it is challenging to stay focused and stay motivated when writing. This is especially true for those who write full time to make a living. Finding the right words day after day to maintain a steady income is not always the easiest thing to do, but for most who earn a living as a freelance writer, it is what has to be done. Each freelancer must decide for themselves what motivates them to keep at their craft. Some simple ideas include:
Challenging yourself content wise
One way to kick motivation into high gear is to challenge yourself to write more. For those who write one or two articles (or blog posts) a week, consider challenging yourself to write one extra day. For those who write daily, consider adding one more article (or blog post) to the daily routine.
Challenging yourself financially
For most freelancers, financial challenges are great motivators. Taking a look at daily, weekly or monthly income and challenging yourself to add even a small amount to that total can provide that extra motivation they are seeking. Setting a financial objective such as a new computer, new wardrobe or simply saving a few extra dollars may be all that it takes.
Challenging yourself mentally
All too often, freelance writers find themselves in a rut regarding what they are writing about. Reaching outside an established comfort zone and delving into topics that might not have previously been considered can be a great way to challenge writers mentally. This type of challenge can be extremely good to promote motivation.
Challenging your marketing
Developing new marketing venues can not only help increase earnings, but it can also be great motivation for a freelancer. Finding new and innovative ways to promote a business can be fun and rewarding at the same time. Those who find they simply have too much time on their hands between clients can turn this situation into making positive strides towards business development.
Rewarding yourself
Freelancers who reach new goals, cross milestones or have found a new way of marketing, writing or have undertaken something new should consider a “self-reward”. Sometimes freelance writing is a very frustrating career and the only person who may acknowledge your hard work is you. Treat yourself to something you really want if you meet a long sought-after goal.
Summary
Every freelancer may find that there are times when they are less than motivated to get done what needs to be done. Finding ways to stay on track and staying motivated means different approaches for different people. No one can provide a freelancer with motivation better than the freelancer.
