Bloggers often abandon their blogs (in fact at an astounding rate) because they feel like they have failed. However, just because a blog has not taken off in line with the expectations of a writer does not necessarily mean that it was doomed to failure. Bloggers all too often give up on their blogs simply because they have failed to keep their expectations realistic. There are some common reasons that a blog might fail in addition to giving up too soon. When bloggers and writers are not making the money they expect, they are looking for reasons why. Here are some of them:
Unrealistic expectations
Thousands of advertisements in email and online brag about how much money a blogger is earning. It is important to keep in mind that these earnings are often inflated and contrived to draw attention to a product or service that someone is selling. Blogging and freelance writing are not the secrets to overnight wealth. Earning money from freelance writing whether you are writing articles or blog posts requires time, energy and effort. Be realistic in setting your freelance writing expectations.
Learn basic SEO techniques
Learning how to successfully incorporate SEO into your work is crucial for all online freelance writers. Organic search engine results do not typically come from promotion, instead they are as a result of searches. Search engine optimization is perhaps most easily understood as “how will people find my work”. Before you write an article or a blog post, consider who might look for the topic and how they might search for the topic. Perhaps one of the most over-rated trick on the internet is conning people into believing that SEO is a mystery. SEO is not mysterious, instead, it is something that nearly everyone can learn if they simply take the time to consider the reader.
Junk content never wins
Some bloggers and writers simply write to make money. For those freelance writers and bloggers, quality is secondary to quantity. This approach to freelance writing will ultimately result in failure. Over the long term, quality content will ultimately surpass quantity in both search engine rankings and in readers. Junk content is never going to be an acceptable method of freelance writing whether it is in articles or on blogs. Over time, this type of work will simply fall to the bottom and a freelance writer may well develop a reputation for low quality work.
Promotion must begin immediately and be ongoing
Perhaps the biggest failure for many freelance writers who are seeking long term revenue opportunities is not learning proper promotion methods. Not all freelance writers enjoy promoting but for those that do, they generally find their income stream is more dependable. Since many freelance writers depend on revenue generated by page views, this stands to reason. The basics of promoting freelance writing work is not that difficult, it is however time consuming.
Summary
Do not give up on freelance writing opportunities too soon. Each opportunity needs time to mature and develop. Activity levels between freelance writers who write articles and those who write blogs are often very different. This does not however mean that one is more successful than the next. Determining early on the path that a freelance writer wishes to take and sticking with it will help a freelance writer find more success.
