There are many challenges that are faced by freelancers, however as small business owners, those risks are inherent to doing business. Are you ready to allow the government to interfere in your freelance business more than they do? Freelancers Union is committed to allowing the government to regulate how you do business.
Freelancers Union is NOT what they are cracked up to be!
Why did you become a freelance professional? Chances are that you did so because you were not happy working for someone else. You made a decision to become a business owner. As a business owner you take on certain challenges and responsibilities. These include:
A) Paying your own taxes – You understand as a business owner that you are responsible for your own taxes. You also understood that the taxes you paid might be different than those that were associated with working for someone else. Along with that however, you also learned ahead of time what expenses could be deducted from your taxes.
B) Running the risk of non-paying clients – Let’s face it; if you have been in any kind of business, you have probably had at least one deadbeat client. This is a fact associated with business ownership. Even large businesses like Wal-Mart and similar businesses are presented with bad checks, charge backs, etc. You can’t get away from this.
C) Sometimes there is no work – Life does not come with any guarantees. Freelancing comes with no guarantees either. You are going to have times when you have plenty of work and other times when you are not going to have much work. You understood freelancing came without the guarantee of steady work – it’s up to you to plan for it financially.
So now about Freelancers Union
While there is no doubt that Freelancers Union may be a force to deal with in New York, I certainly hope they stay there. I am of the opinion that Freelancers Union is trying to make employees out of freelancers. This company is not a Union – let’s get that straight right out of the box. They are defined by the Better Business Bureau as an Insurance Company. On their website they will sing the praises of their PAC (Political Action Committee) activities.
Their three “big” initiatives
A) Lower cost health care – I find it laughable that a company who has had so many complaints about health care is advocating for cheaper health care for freelancers. There are options to this foolishness since this company only offers plans that are really good to residents of New York and the rest of the users pay outrageous rates – not to mention that they also require you to prove you work 20 hours a week or more as a freelancer by providing them with tons of personal information, which I feel is none of their business. NASE (National Association for the Self Employed) and United Chambers of Commerce (UCC) offer plenty of plans without these asinine requirements.
B) Department of Labor access – This one just slayed me. The Freelancers Union wants to get the Department of Labor involved in helping freelancers ensure they are paid and that they are paid fair rates. GET A JOB. If you want guarantees of payment or a rate of payment, then stop working for yourself and go back to work for someone else. Take some responsibility for yourself for a change and stop waiting for someone else to take care of you – give me a break. Do you have ANY clue what being a business owner means? Seriously folks, man up!
C) Unemployment Protection – Again, if you want guarantees that you can collect unemployment compensation between jobs, get a job. They want to set up a “fund” that is similar to a health care savings account that would allow Freelancers who are “short on work” to collect a stipend between jobs. Have these people ever heard of banks? Most freelancers I know understand that they will face work gaps. Get over it and plan for it. Why do you need some third party to protect you – you’re a business owner – protect yourself or forget about running a business and go back to work.
I am constantly stunned by the level of incompetence that is allowed to flourish in the freelance market. You would think that people who were freelancers would have brains enough to be aware that they have to work at getting work through marketing themselves. You would think they were smart enough to work with their client to ensure that they are paid for work – if the client doesn’t pay for the work – YOU OWN IT – figure out how to make money with it.
People who make the decision to freelance need to grow up and take ownership of their business. Otherwise they need to go back to work for Corporate America and take their chances. Take control of your future or don’t, but I personally do not want Freelancers Union being in control of my future. The day I have to pay for “unemployment” protection is the day I’ll go back to a 9 to 5 job and give up on my business.
