Social Media Reviews: Xomba

In the past, I was a huge fan of Xomba though I admit to having some hiccups with the way they did things. It was pretty common to find a lot of “themed” writing and some of the material was — well suffice it to say it was questionable.

Xomba in the past

Users could sign up for an account and share bookmarks to various websites, blog posts or individual articles. Unlike RedGage, you had to do slightly more than place a few sentences into a description. Bookmarks were required to be at least 25 words and they had to be written in a manner that encouraged the reader to go to the link to read more.  Xomba bookmarks could be shared on Twitter or other sites and potentially they would drive traffic to the item that was linked.

Those who used Xomba were encouraged to share their own work as well as the work of others. This meant that many users (myself included) found a “mix” of their own work and others work to submit as bookmarks.  Revenue share was handled directly through AdSense accounts and while the revenue wasn’t anything to write home about, it was something.

The “new” Xomba

In an effort to “improve” Xomba there have been a number of changes. While you can still share bookmarks and links on Xomba, you can no longer share your own content! Now this might work great if you have developed a huge following of people on Xomba who can help you promote your work by creating links to it, what is the point? There are tons of sites available where you can promote a mix of your own work and other people’s work if you want to – they’re far more popular and well read than Xomba also.  Sites like Stumble Upon, Yahoo Answers, Red Gage and more allow users to share bookmarks for their own work so why bother?

I’m sure that there are people who have managed to find their way around the Xomba rules perhaps by adopting a pen name, finding others to promote their work, etc.. However, for most writers who barely have time to promote their own work, there are much easier tools to deal with.  My recommendation is if you have an existing Xomba account, go for it, otherwise, don’t bother!
