Comfort zones matter

Expanding opportunitiesThere are a number of well respected freelance writers who will take on any assignment if it means making a dollar. I think this is great because after all, someone has to write to fill needs of clients. I am not one of those writers, in fact, I’ve turned down so many assignments that it’s almost laughable when I think about it.

Comfort zones and speed

One of the reasons that I tend to ignore topics that I have no “general” interest in is that I value my time (highly).  The more comfortable I am with a topic, the faster I can write. I think this is true for most writers, after all, if we can avoid researching there’s a good chance that we can get through material far faster.

Comfort zones and tone

Sometimes it is easy to tell when a piece of content has been written by someone who has no “real” knowledge about a topic. The writing seems a bit stilted and chances are that there are weird gaps in knowledge and that sometimes makes the article a bit challenging to read forcing people to look for additional information.  While this is perfectly acceptable if you are writing strictly for search engines, it is probably not going to gain you a lot of readers.

What’s the answer?

Many writers will take anything in order to earn money and I personally have no issues if that is what they wish to do. However, when writing for clients, chances are that your “gaps” in knowledge are going to show!  If you are going to write about topics that you have no real interest (or knowledge) with, please make sure you do your research.

Not everyone thinks that it is fine to turn down work when they have no interest in it or when they simply don’t feel that their skills are “up to” the task.

When do you think it’s ok to turn down work?
When I have no interest in the subject
When I don’t have the time
When I don’t like the client
 When the topic offends me
Never ok to turn down work
I will accept anything that pays me
