Writing Site Reviews: HubPages

I have had a HubPages account for years. Four to be exact.  At one time I had more than 100 published hubs. After going back and looking at some of them, they were pretty pathetic to be honest with you. I transferred a bunch of the “old” garbage back to the clients they were intended for and maintained only my own content. I went ahead and updated most of them and I even created a few new ones. With the new HubPages advertising program, I was not too sure how this would work out. But I have to admit to being pleasantly surprised.  Without much care and feeding, I’ve earned about $25 on Hub Pages over a year. Yes, I know this is nothing at all, but honestly, over the last 30 days I’ve earned $5.00 of that so that’s really not so bad when you consider that most of the items that I had there were absolute junk!

The traffic

I’ve had a steady stream of traffic to my Hubs that really surprised me when I went and took a closer look at them. In 30 days I have had just over 300 hits on my Hubs (keep in mind I have only over 20 now since I have removed so many of them!). One third of these hits are coming directly from HubPages itself. The remaining two thirds are coming from Google, split between Google US and Google UK so I think that’s not too bad.

The earnings

OK So I’m hardly overwhelmed with the earnings, but frankly, I’m not that upset with them either! After all, earning $25 on a site that I have spent less than an hour on in the last 12 months isn’t all that bad. Especially with what I consider “sub-par” work.  So my current plan is to make sure that I try to add a new hub every week.

Words of warning

Do not plan to go to Hubpages and start copy and pasting your old work! It’s original content only. The good news is that you can “answer questions” that other users ask. For example, my “newest” Hub is one that I wrote answering the question “Why do people fall for Internet email scams?” It was fun to write and in a few hours, it’s gotten a few views. Not a bad deal all in all!  I actually seem to have made my first sale of an Ebay item too which is rather funny in of itself.

Linkbuilding and HubPages

You can use HubPages to build links to your blog, website or your online articles. You simply need to know how to do it most effectively. For instance: I pulled this current Hub: The basics of business blogging from my Squidoo page because I’m frankly a bit fed up with Squidoo (more about that later).  Because there were more than three (3) links in there to one site, I had to tweak it a bit to use on Hub Pages. But 3 links to one site is not all that bad either.  So use it smart, but do not overdo it.

HubPages pays out at the $50 level. I am going to assume since I have $25 with about 15 active Hubs that it will take me a while to get there. That’s ok too, as I have a lot of patience (I write online don’t I?).   I’ll post an update in March or April and let you know how this is working out.  In the meantime, you might want to consider registering for HubPages, do a few Hubs about your favorite subjects and see what happens.

I write at hubpages and am finding it a good source for a low level of income. After ten months and over 100 good hubs which really provide information and don’t just try to link elsewhere, I make about 1 dollar per hub a month average. Getting to the 100 hub mark is vital.
