Writing Site Updates: Media Piston

tiny exclamationOne of my most “popular” writing site reviews was the one I did on Media Piston. Admittedly I was fairly new to the site when I wrote it and to be honest, I’ve had sufficient amounts of work that I really have not spent much time on the site.  I was aware that as an oDesk contractor, I could sign into Media Piston with my oDesk login but never did it that way because this change seemed to occur after I signed up. After a couple of weeks, I discovered that oDesk users were confused about Media Piston as you can see reading these threads:

It was clear that you could do both and there was no requirement for you to have an oDesk account in order to accept work at Media Piston so it was not a big deal to me and honestly I never thought more about it. From time to time I’d go and check orders but I’m so picky about what I’ll accept for writing assignments, I really never did anything after my first 10 articles. Then yesterday, this email came:

We’re writing to let you know about a recent decision that affects us all. On March 31st, MediaPiston will discontinue service and transition our client base to oDesk’s online workplace.

Here are a few important things to know about the transition:

  • You will be paid for any and all work completed
  • You will be able to complete all in-progress orders
  • You can continue to claim posted orders, but no new orders will be posted beginning February 28th

Most importantly, we want to make sure you still have a place to land jobs and earn money, which is why we have added you to an exclusive MediaPiston Writer’s Group on oDesk. We are directing all existing MediaPiston clients to this group, where they can continue to post jobs and you can apply to them. If you prefer not to be a part of this group, you can remove yourself here.

It has been an absolute pleasure working with you. We will always be grateful for your inspiration, appreciation, and support. With this in mind, we truly hope you will continue to keep the MediaPiston spirit alive on oDesk.

Please refer to this FAQ for more information on the transition. For questions or assistance during the transition, don’t hesitate to contact us at writers@mediapiston.comor join us on the writer forums.

All our best,

The MediaPiston Team

Turns out, there are 188 oDesk contractors who are part of the Media Piston group.  Of those contractors, 112 do not have any feedback at all.  There are 64 of us who have feedback between 4.5 and 5.0 (the highest range you can get). What’s fascinating is that the “average” pay of the people in that group is just over $20 per hour and mine (at $40 per hour) is not the highest.

I’ll remain part of the Media Piston group since the drill seems to be the assignments will be posted at oDesk for those of us who are part of the group. What will be interesting to see is what comes of it and what happens down the road to these assignments. If I have further information to report, you will find it here!
