The savings from public transportation is easy to identify, those who elect to work at home will save 100% of all commuting costs associated with public transportation. What may surprise some people is how much money is actually saved on personal vehicle use when they elect to work at home.

Savings on gasoline and oil

Clearly as the cost of gasoline has gone up, it’s fairly easy to determine how much money can be saved from gas. The more hours that one spends in their car commuting, the more wear and tear on the engine and the more oil that is used. These are basic costs of running an automobile and one that will dramatically decrease if you are working from home. The longer the commute, the less time your work at home job takes you from the home, the more savings you’ll realize.

Savings on maintenance costs

While oil changes are part of routine maintenance, most car manufacturers recommend that certain services be performed every 1,500 or 3,000 miles. Clearly, the less frequently you are driving your car, the more you can save. These savings can add up quickly as brakes need to be maintained less frequently, tires suffer less wear and tear and of course winter salt does not have an opportunity to eat away at your car.

Savings on insurance costs

Many drivers are not aware that some insurance companies reward them for low annual mileage. For those who work at home this can mean significant savings. In some cases, these discounts can be as high as 12% and can mean a lot of long-term savings. In addition, chances are that because someone decides to work at home, they can increase their deductible since they are at lower risk for an accident since they drive less.

There are many benefits to working from home and when you add transportation to the list of savings, you will begin to realize the various benefits. In addition, when working from home, depending on your industry you may also be able to deduct mileage charges from your tax return.
