There are some days when I could just thrash someone – actually, that’s probably most days. One of the things that constantly baffles me is what part of self employment people miss. I always understood that being self-employed meant you were undertaking some form of risk. However, too many freelancers want to have their cake (e.g., be self-employed) and eat it too (e.g., not taking risks). This blows my mind! Now I have certainly discussed this before in the post “Freelance marketplace trap” and I have railed against “protections” for freelancers in “Why I think Freelancers Union is bad” and “Disturbing trend for freelancers“. I have been a vocal voice against establishing minimum wages for freelancers because I believe that it “cheapens” the marketplace and does not allow for flexibility in earnings. I set my own rates, I would prefer to keep it that way — the day that a “minimum” wage goes into place for freelancing of any type, we’re all in serious trouble. Now onto escrow This one really irks me more than anything in the world. There is a “movement” on oDesk currently where mostly non-US based freelancers are asking for oDesk to institute an escrow feature [...]

Just when you think you have seen everything, something happens to really make you wake up and pay attention. Now before I get accused of not knowing my facts let me be clear about a couple of things: (A) I don’t work for low rates on freelancing sites and (B) I’ve never been “invited” to take part in one of these assignments. However, that does not change the facts that they are out there. I always have pointed out to freelancers that they are working mostly at odds with clients. After all, a freelancers primary goal is to make as much as possible from each assignment while the goal of the client is to get as much work as possible for as little money as possible. This is clearly a serious conflict since freelancers and their clients have opposing goals. However, this also creates some other problems that no one ever considers. Let’s get this straight first I don’t care if you take an assignment that ultimately pays you $1 an hour. At all times, you are obligated to do your best work. I am not one of these people that believes that if you are paying slave cheap rates [...]

Generally I enjoy Squidoo but I’ve noticed some disturbing things that have caused me to pull back my submissions to the site. In fact, I have removed all of my lenses from the site. Earlier this year I had pursued putting a lot of my work up there as a way of highlighting topics that I felt were well done, provided solid information, etc. However, I quickly discovered I was really wasting time with no hope of recovering much at all from the time I invested. In January, I had only three lenses left in my “reserve” area because I had deleted over fifty. However, I had worked my way up to 35 lenses. Over the last few weeks, I’ve removed those lenses and here is why: Total unpaid cash waiting in your Reserve Hopper: $0.11 The .11 is what I have successfully earned since January. I had one lens that was marked at “100 percent” one of the dumbest features of Squidoo. This “completeness factor” is based entirely on an internal system of comments, “high-rated squid ratings” and “angel blessings”. Seriously! I moved about 1/2 of the lenses over to HubPages and made Hubs from these same exact lenses. [...]

As most of you know if I am going to use a freelance site, I do prefer oDesk. While it does take some time to get your first assignment, over time, oDesk in my opinion is the best. This does not stop me from looking at other sites to see what they are offering. And for the record, Elance has an excellent reputation; I do not use them because I do not like their “buy credits” system as I believe that if I am going to land a freelance assignment I shouldn’t be paying for service until AFTER I land an assignment, not while I’m looking for one. With that said, I found a truly disturbing freelance site that appears that it is attempting at least to mimic oDesk and Elance. Let’s take a look under the hood. Professional looking but poorly written The site name is called Work and Hire. The overall look of the website is very sleek but that’s where the good stuff ends. There are some common “themes” here, like oDesk they guarantee payment on hourly assignments and they do not guarantee payment on fixed rate assignments. Job quality seems to be about the same as [...]

We need to be honest with ourselves when we are self-employed and make sure that we are making the most of the hours that we invest in our business. There are some tasks that simply do not provide a good return on our investment of time and in some cases, they will never provide a good return for the time that we invest. In order to make the amount of money that you need to make, you need to make sure that you are managing your time well and investing the hours that you have well. First set income goals One of the first things that you need to determine is what your monthly income goal need to be. If you need to earn $1,000 a month and someone else needs to earn $2,000 then your time management techniques are going to be significantly different. If each of you is working 40 hours a week, your “hourly” earnings have to equal $6.25 (net) hourly for $1,000 a month but $12.50 for $2,000 a month. This can be problematic if you have to scrape around for assignments to meet that goal. Set your hours Clearly if you need to work 40 [...]
